What is tooth extraction?

After local anaesthetic, the dentist loosens the tooth in its socket and lifts it out. A tooth that is broken at the gum, or a wisdom tooth that is partly buried, may need a small cut in the gum and a stitch or two.

Once the gap has healed, you can discuss replacing the tooth, so that the teeth beside it do not drift.

Recovery

For the first day: no rinsing, smoking or very hot drinks, and soft food on the other side. From the next day, rinse gently with warm salt water after meals.

Will it hurt?

You feel pressure but no pain during the extraction. Afterwards, ordinary painkillers usually control the soreness for two or three days.

Can a painful tooth be taken out the same day?

Often, yes. Very swollen teeth sometimes need the infection settled first.

What is a dry socket?

Pain a few days after an extraction when the clot is lost from the socket. It is more common in smokers. Come back and it can be dressed.

Should I take out a wisdom tooth that does not hurt?

Not usually. Wisdom teeth are removed when they cause repeated infection, decay or damage to the tooth in front.
